Our History

Moving Our Customers Home for Over a Century

Founded in 1903, Mr. R.G. Hilldrup started his company as a horse-and-carriage transportation company hauling baggage from trains and steamships for students attending a local college, what is now the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.

Through the 1930s, even during the Great Depression, Hilldrup expanded its services to include moving and storage, bus and taxi rides, rigging and freight. C.B. McDaniel, a devoted employee of the company for eight years, bought the business from R. G. Hilldrup in 1940, who then sold various divisions to focus on moving and storage.

Since then, three different generations of the McDaniel family have led Hilldrup. C.B.’s son, Charles G. McDaniel, served as President from 1976 to 2005, with his son, Charles W. McDaniel, taking over in 2005. Charles W. continues to lead Hilldrup to this day, with his children, Jordan and Charlie joining the company in 2015, marking the first time in Hilldrup’s history that three generations of McDaniels have worked for the company at the same time. With each new generation, the tradition and strength of family continues, creating a sense of stability within the company.

In 2007, Hilldrup became an agent for Mayflower Van Lines, one of the most trusted names in residential moving with branches throughout the southeastern United States. Each year, Hilldrup Mayflower helps thousands of families and individuals move wherever they need to go, whether it’s down the street or across the country.
