How to Pack and Wrap Knives for Moving and Storage

It is extremely important to pack knives correctly to avoid unexpected injuries during your move. Packing knives can be tricky, but taking the time to do it right will pay off in the end.

Here are the steps to follow when packing your cutlery to keep your knives secure during your move – and potentially save yourself a trip to the emergency room.

How to pack knives

Packing knives require your full attention, and you’ll need newsprint or packing paper to do it correctly.

Start by placing one knife near the corner of the newsprint, then cover by rolling the paper a few times. Then place another knife on the newsprint and roll. Repeat these steps while alternating the direction in which the blades are facing. Once you’ve wrapped a few knives, fold the excess newsprint toward the middle and roll to the end.

If it looks like a burrito, you did it correctly.

Continue these steps until all knives are securely and safely wrapped. Tape each bundle of knives so that they do not unravel during the moving process. Label each packet of knives for easy recognition.

Best way to pack large knives

For larger knives, use the above steps and wrap the bundle in a second sheet of newsprint for extra protection.

Once all of your knives are wrapped securely, you can pack them into boxes with your other kitchen items. When a box is full, fill in gaps with crumpled newsprint to prevent the items from shifting during the move.

Close and secure the box with packing tape on all sides. Lastly, label the box to keep things organized.
